Chelyabinsk was founded in 1736 as a watch fortress on routes from Trans-Urals to Orenburg. You can watch the history of the city development and formation here. Today Chelyabinsk numbers over million citizens. It is the administrative center of Chelyabinsk region and a part of Ural Federal District of the Russian Federation.
Chelyabinsk territory is about 53 thousand hectares. It’s only twice smaller in size than Moscow and can be compared to such European country as Andorra. The space south to the Lenin Street would be enough to comprise Liechtenstein, San-Marino, Monaco and the Vatican.
Chelyabinsk is the second most populous city in Ural Federal District and the ninth in Russia.
Chelyabinsk is situated on the eastern slope of the Ural Mountains on the both banks of the Miass river (a tributary of the Iset’ River) which is considered to be a geological border between Ural and Siberia. The rich water area includes besides River Miass Shershnyovskoye Reservoir, Lake Smolino, Pervoye, Sineglazovo and a lot of other water bodies with18% of Chelyabinsk territory in total.
Modern Chelyabinsk is a large industrial city, a business, scientific and cultural center of South Ural. It is one of the five most powerful industrial cities of the country.
It is a major transport hub connected with the whole Eurasian continent by its lines of communication. Federal highways M5, M36 and M51 run through the capital of South Ural and there is an international airport “Chelyabinsk” in the city. The Chelyabinsk Railway Department is the biggest transport hub of the Trans-Siberian Railway.
Chelyabinsk is one of the three Russian metropolises with the most developed infrastructure. Passenger transportation is carried out with trolley buses, tramways, buses, route taxi-vans and taxies. The underground railway construction is in progress now.
Year by year Chelyabinsk becomes more and more comfortable and well-equipped, at the same time preserving its historical identity and the unique natural landscape. Its modern image is the merit of all the generations of its citizens starting with the Cossacks and peasants, merchants and craftsmen, doctors and teachers from old Chelyaba. Kirovka pedestrian street became the jewel and special pride of the city, which is also called by some citizens like Chelyabinsk Arbat (tr. The Arbat is an approximately one-kilometer long pedestrian street in the historical centre of Moscow). There are 19 decorative sculptures and compositions placed on Kirovka street that embody the images of historical figures and literary characters and represent people of different professions and social groups. There are the craftsman Levsha,Gorodovoy (tr.19th century policeman in the Russian Empire), Saxophone Player, Woman of fashion, Begger, Tradesman and many others among them. "The zero Milestone" is also set up there. It is the anchor, the starting point the distance to the other Russian cities and towns are counted from.
The all-time favorite resting place of both citizens and city guests is The Central Park of recreation and entertainment named after U.A. Gagarin adjoined to an old-growth pine woods. There are also City Garden named after A.S.Pushkin and Aloye Pole garden square in the list of favorite resting places of Chelyabinsk people. On the territory of Victory Garden there is a unique exhibition of fighting machines of the Second World War period gathered right in the open air.
In Chelyabinsk zoo there are more than a hundred different species of wild beasts and birds including the ones that put in the Red List. Among zoo's inhabitants there are white bears, Amur tiger, snow leopard, Amur leopard and chimpanzee. A petting zoo is also located in the territory, where children cannot just loot at animals but also feed them and play with them.
The building of the Regional Museum of Local Lore is found to be one of the most beautiful architectural structures in the city and it is located on the Miass riverbank. The unique expositions of the museum represent an amazing in its diversity world of wild life of South Ural and the life of its inhabitants from the period of the early Iron Age. The museum funds keep coins, medals, Zlatoust steel engravings, art castings of cast iron, paintings, porcelain, samples of applied and decorative arts.
The history of the city is also shown in the monumental works of Soviet sculpture such as the monument of V.I.Lenin on the central square of the city and "Orlenok" in the Aloye pole park. The architectural landmark of Chelyabinsk is the sculptural composition "Skaz ob Urale" situated at the bus station square.
Now far from South Ural State University The monument of I.V.Kuchatov, the famous academician and nuclear expert, the Chief Director of Sciences of USSR Nuclear Project . The "By the Kurchatov" place has lately become the place where the lovers of extreme sports gather.
The memorial complexes proclaim the feats of arms and labor of the citizens. Chelyabinsk citizens traditionally lay wreaths and flowers to the Eternal Fire memorial on the Slava Boulevard that was turned on the eve of Victory Day's 20 years anniversary. Near by the Eternal Fire memorial the monument of the Tankmen-volunteers is located that symbolizes the unity of the front and the rare. The memorial of Mourning Mothers on the Lesnoy cemetery reminds of the warriors died in the Chelyabinsk hospitals. On the Komsomol square there is the IS tank placed on the postament which production was set up in Chelyabinsk during Second World War.
"The sphere of Love" is the most romantic composition of Chelyabinsk situated near the "Kinomax-Ural" cinema. This monument was designed by the group of sculptors headed by Viktor Mitroshyn. A huge cupola made of Bristol blue levitates above the four tree-piles covered with copper. A boy and a girl stopped motionless under the cupola while flying towards each other. The stairs at the base of the composition lead to the small place under the cupola which is traditionally visited by the couples and just-married.
The look of the modern city is added by the multiple business centers like "Misar","Chelyabinsk-city", "Arkaim-Plaza", "Spiridon business-house", shopping and entertainment malls like "Gorki", "Megapolis", "Focus", "Cuba","Sinegorye".
In the last century Chelyabinsk developed mostly as the industrial center and the city of metallurgy and machinery.
The main production of the capital of South Ural is metallurgical engineering and the production of the ready-made metal products that are now about 60% of total volume of products in the turnout of all city enterprises.
Chelyabinsk is one of the largest manufacturers of high quality alloys, heat-resisting and stainless steel, rolled and flat steel. Industrial giants of the capital of the region are known far beyond the borders of the region itself and the boarders of the country. There are such representatives among them as Chelyabinsk Metallurgical and Electrometallurgical Works, Chelyabinsk Pipe-Rolling Plant, “Trubodetal” Plant and others.
The mechanical engineering forms about 13% of the sectoral structure of Chelyabinsk industrial production. Among the largest enterprises are: Chelyabinsk Tractor Works, Chelyabinsk Road Machine Plant Of Kolyuschenko and Chelyabinsk Mechanical Plant.
Chelyabinsk has a well-developed food industry and also tertiary industry and trade. The products of confectionery factory “Yuzhuralconditer”, Agricultural corporation “Makfa”, Food Manufacturing Center “Ariant” and Corporation “Coyuzpischeprom” are popular with Russian buyers.

The Order of Lenin, the government award is the award that Chelyabinsk was presented at the first time in 1980 according with the Decree of the Supreme Soviet of the USSR. The city was awarded for the success that was achieved in economic and cultural development. At year-end of 2006 Chelyabinsk was named the best administrative center of Ural Federal District judging by the rates of economical development of the year showed on the 5th All-Russian competition called "Golden Ruble". Chelyabinsk outran such strong contestants as Ekaterinburg and Khanty-Mansyisk. The remarkable thing is that it wasn't the first Golden Ruble Award of Chelyabinsk, the same one Chelyabinsk had got in 2003 in analogic nomination.
The results of "The Best city of CIS", the first on CIS scale review competition was summed up in April 2008 in Moscow within the International Forum "Megapolis: 21st century" . About 70 cities of Russia, Armenia, Belarus, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Moldova, Tajikistan, Ukraine and Georgia took part in the event. The contest allowed revealing the cities of CIS with the most dynamically developing economics and social sphere but with preserved original and cultural peculiarities, the ones that have real achievements in solutions of problems of local value and questions of social and economical development. Chelyabinsk became a winner of the review- competition in three nominations at a time, those were "Stable, dynamic city development", "Preservation and maintaining of cultural and historical heritage", " Successful reforming of the common education system".
In May of 2008 the Award Council of the All-Russian Union of Private Associations decided to award the municipal district “City of Chelyabinsk" with the Russian Nation Order. The citizens, subjects and municipal districts, organizations of Russian Federation can be bestowed with the prize for special merits for the country, valuable contribution in procuring of national unity and the consolidation of Russian statehood. Chelyabinsk got the award "For the high rates in social and economic development, the improvement of the quality of life, for the realization of programs and projects in the sphere of ethnocultural heritage of the nationalities of Russian Federation and interethnic and interreligious agreement, preventive measures in xenophobia and extremism".
In June 2008 according with the Decree of The Energy, Transport and Communication Committee of The State Duma and The Ministry of Transport of the Russian Federation Mikhail Yuryevich, The Head of Chelyabinsk was honored to be a laureate of Chariot of Gold Award, the National and Public Prize in the sphere of transport sector. Consequently, the capital of South Ural made it into top three cities with the most developed infrastructure.
